The Music Palace was the last Chinese-language movie theater to close in New York’s Chinatown. The building at 91-93 Bowery was constructed in the late 1890s and altered for use as theater in 1914 when it opened as Universal Photoplay. At some point it was renamed to World Theater and then to Music Palace in the early 1970’s when it began showing Chinese movies. The theater was managed by Golden Films International, which was a subsidiary of the legendary Hong Kong movie studio Shaw Brothers Ltd. The theater was the last of the Chinatown cinemas to close; surviving until 2000.
